It is called so because when this city is viewed from sky it resembles the shape of horse shoe. This is terranious place not plain area . The city is full of various religious and cultural beliefs.
Lets have a quick view of the history of this city . So according the ancient history it was 1st mentioned in Hinu epic "Mahabharata" (8th an 9th BCE).
Accoring to mordern history this city is ruled by many rulers . Around 1500 years this city is know as "Alamnagar" or "Rajpur".
It was founded by in 1568 by "Kalyan chand" during the rule of chand dynasty. British came to almora during 1815 and contribute to the development of this region.
When we go through the administrative history, Earlier during 1947-1960 Almora was the part of "Pithorgarh". After that during 1960-1997 it was the part of "Bhageshwar". Finally in 1997 it became independent ditrict of Uttarakand state.
HOW TO REACH
Nearest railway station- Kathgodam (90km away from Almora) . After that the best way to go forward is by hiering a cab from Kathgodam to almora.
Nearest Airport - Pantnagar Airport (125km from Almora). After that Dehra Dun Airport (173km from Almora)
Roadways - Well developed and well connected system of cars and buses to Almora. Almora is connected to NH87 and NH87E.

आइए इस शहर के इतिहास के बारे में देखें। इसलिए प्राचीन इतिहास के अनुसार यह हिनू महाकाव्य "महाभारत" (8 वीं 9 वीं ईसा पूर्व) में पहली बार उल्लेख किया गया था।
इतिहास के इतिहास में यह शहर कई शासकों द्वारा शासित है। लगभग 1500 वर्षों में इस शहर को "आलमनगर" या "राजपुर" के नाम से जाना जाता है।
इसकी स्थापना 1568 में चंद वंश के शासन के दौरान "कल्याण चंद" द्वारा की गई थी। ब्रिटिश 1815 के दौरान अल्मोड़ा आए और इस क्षेत्र के विकास में योगदान दिया।
जब हम प्रशासनिक इतिहास से गुजरते हैं, तो इससे पहले 1947-1960 के दौरान अल्मोड़ा "पिथौरागढ़" का हिस्सा था। उसके बाद 1960-1997 के दौरान यह "भागेश्वर" का हिस्सा था। अंत में 1997 में यह उत्तराखंड राज्य का स्वतंत्र क्षेत्र बन गया।
कैसे पहुंचा जाये
निकटतम रेलवे स्टेशन- काठगोदाम (अल्मोड़ा से 90 किमी दूर)। उसके बाद आगे बढ़ने का सबसे अच्छा तरीका है काठगोदाम से अल्मोड़ा के लिए एक टैक्सी को आगे बढ़ाना।
निकटतम हवाई अड्डा - पंतनगर हवाई अड्डा (अल्मोड़ा से 125 किमी)। उसके बाद देहरादून हवाई अड्डा (अल्मोड़ा से 173 किमी)
रोडवेज - अल्मोड़ा के लिए कारों और बसों की अच्छी तरह से विकसित और अच्छी तरह से जुड़ी प्रणाली। अल्मोड़ा NH87 और NH87E से जुड़ा है।
घूमने के स्थान
यह पर्यटन स्थलों में से एक में गिना जा सकता है। केदारनाथ, त्रिशूल पर्वत और नंदादेवी पर्वत जैसी जगहों को इसके शून्य बिंदु से देखा जा सकता है। यह स्थान विभिन्न तीर्थ स्थलों से भरा हुआ है जैसे जागेश्वर मंदिर-जो 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है, कासर देवी मंदिर - जो अल्मोड़ा से 5 किमी दूर है, कटारमल सूर्य मंदिर। - 800 साल पुराना मंदिर, चितई मंदिर, बिनसर महादेव, दुनागिरि, द्वाराहाट, रानीखेत, भैरव मंदिर, पाताल देवी मंदिर, बनारी देवी मंदिर, त्रिपुर सुंदरी मंदिर, देवस्थल मंदिर, गायरार गोलू देवता मंदिर।
शिक्षा प्रणाली अच्छी तरह से स्थापित है और शिक्षा केंद्र के रूप में जाना जाता है। शिक्षा के उद्देश्य के लिए विभिन्न स्कूल और कॉलेज हैं जैसे कुमाऊं विश्वविद्यालय, रामसे इंटर कॉलेज, एडम्स गर्ल्स इंटर कॉलेज आदि। इसमें संग्रहालय (जी.बी. पंत संग्रहालय) भी है।
खरीदारी के उद्देश्य से लाल बाजार बहुत लोकप्रिय है। मॉल भी हैं।
